In 2005, the 109th United States Congress passed a resolution recognizing April 6 as National Tartan Day. The importance of this day, while commemorating the profound influence of Scots in America, recognizes a more fundamental event in that nation's history. National Tartan Day commemorates the signing of the Declaration of Arbroath--Scotland's Declaration of Independence signed on April 6, 1320. Not only did many Scots or those of Scottish descent take part in signing our Declaration of Independence, over 150 years later, but the document itself was profoundly influenced by its Scottish predecesor. The resolution passed by congress recognizes the place of Scots in American history, and importantly, in the political foundation of the United States of America. Please join the Illinois Saint Andrew Society in celebration of an event identifying a most illustrious and inextricable link between the two countries.
